MKT Depot and Rose Garden
 |
|

|
|
Lancaster's train depot was opened in December 1888 as a stop on the
Dallas and Waco Railroad. In 1891, this railroad became part of
the Missouri, Kansas and Texas (MKT) line, running from Dallas to the
Gulf Coast of Texas. The Depot's original location on East Main
Street was slightly north of its current location at Centre and Pecan. |

The Rose Garden adjacent to the
Depot was dedicated in loving memory of J. Cecil Edwards, former mayor
of Lancaster, by his wife Geneva Edwards Anderson and daughter, Betty
Edwards Woodward.

The Garden features many varieties of roses,
including antique roses imported from Lancaster, England, along with
crape myrtles and seasonal flowers that combine to create a riot of
color every spring and summer.

The front room (photo at right) is the site
of the Historical Society's regular meetings, and will seat
25-30 comfortably, with room for a speaker and/or meeting
moderator at the front. Additionally, the table may be
used for a recording secretary or for a laptop and projector for
multi-media presentations. |

The Historical Society offers refreshments in
the reception room (photo at left) before every meeting.
This room can easily accommodate 30-35 people. The Depot's
galley-style kitchen is just on the other side of the
pass-through windows shown in the photo, and features a new
(2007) range, refrigerator, and microwave, along with a
stainless steel sink. |

Ten park benches were added to the Rose
Garden in 2005, providing space for 30 people to rest and enjoy
our wide variety of roses, crape myrtles, and seasonal
flowers. For OktoberFest, we brought in tables and chairs
to provide dinner seating for about 110 people. Depending
on the type of event you're planning, you may want to use both
the Depot and Rose Garden, which together will seat about 150
for dining.
